Hong Kong’s military and naval bases, and the tip of Kowloon at Tsim Sha Tsui, frame the middle harbour. This view cannot be seen today, due to Admiralty’s wall of buildings; but the high elevation
of this image suggests it was taken from Magazine Gap Road. The basin and graving dock of HMS Tamar are visible, with a small flotilla of Royal Navy warships. The army’s Victoria and
Murray barracks lie further inland.

The Royal Navy occupied the middle foreshore of
Hong Kong Island, facing the narrowest section of the harbour.
